Petra Amrani, Ph.D.

Specializes in: Trauma, Interpersonal Problems, Isolation & Loneliness and Developing Mindfulness, Self-Esteem and Self-Compassion

I am a licensed clinical psychologist, specializing in trauma, interpersonal problems, isolation and loneliness and developing mindfulness, self-esteem and self-compassion. Originally from Sweden, I first became a psychologist in Paris, France, where I specialized in “Intercultural Psychology”, studying the effect of culture on the psyche and the mental and emotional challenge and richness of changing countries, cultures, and languages.  I later moved to the US and completed my Ph.D. at Adelphi University, New York City.

My therapeutic orientation is client-centered and dynamic at heart. I also use techniques from DBT, CBT and experiential approaches such as AEDP. I am interested in different emotion-based, fast-acting and transformative therapeutic techniques, that help clients develop increased self-awareness, mindfulness, sense of direction in their lives, and self-compassion.

My private practice is located close to Union Square. Currently, I also work at Columbia University Counseling Center. In my 10+ years of practice, I have worked inpatient at Long Island Jewish and Kings County Hospital, and outpatient in the Personality Disorders Clinic at St Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital.
